Collin County Seminar: immune system key to long-term vitality A free afternoon seminar about the immune system will be held 4:30 p.m June 1 at The Plano Station in downtown Plano. Remembering topic of free bereavement luncheon Matt Wadsworth, a hospice social worker with the Visiting Nurse Association, will speak on “Remembering Well” at the May 19 bereavement luncheon hosted by the Visiting Nurse Association of Collin County. Equine desensitizing clinic offered Saturday, May 10 The Collin County Extension Horse Committee will be hosting an equine desensitizing clinic from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at the Hwy. 500 Arena near the Valdosta Community located between McKinney and Blue Ridge. The clinic will be presented by John Wiltsie and John Jones of the McKinney Mounted Police Department. Cost is $20 per participant with a horse or $5 per spectator. Farmersville Audie Murphy Day celebration held June 21 The annual Audie Murphy Day celebration will be held June 21 in the downtown Farmersville area. The celebration, held annually on or near the honoree’s birthday, celebrates hometown hero Audie Leon Murphy, the most decorated American soldier of World War II. The festivities also recognizes local men and women who have served or are serving in the nation’s armed forces, organizers said. Downtown merchants make Mother’s Day sweeter The Farmersville Downtown Merchant’s Association is giving away gift bags of fudge in honor of Mother's Day. Between Thursday, May 8, through Sunday, May 10, stop by all downtown shops with your mother or shop for a gift for her and receive the added treat of homemade fudge. “All the gift and antique shops on the downtown square are participating. There are many advantages to shopping locally, including saving on gas given today’s high prices. We just wanted to make the experience a little sweeter,” stated one downtown business owner. Only one gift bag per person and the offer is valid only while supplies last from participating merchants. Letter carriers to host annual food drive May 10 U.S. Postal letter carriers will be hosting their annual food drive Saturday, May 10. They ask anyone wishing to participate to put non-perishable donations in a bag by your mailbox. Letter carriers will collect the bags and deliver the food to a local food bank. There is also a food donation drop off box in the lobby of the Farmersville Post Office. BALL Club to host breakfast program May 15 Area adults are invited to attend the Be Active Live Longer Club for their breakfast and program on Thursday, May 15, at 9 a.m. at First Baptist Farmersville. The male BALL Club members will be cooking and attendees are asked to pay $1 to cover the cost of the food. About 1,500 cyclists are expected to participate in the May 17 bike rally, benefiting the Lance Armstrong Shaped Beam Surgery program at Richardson Regional Cancer Center. Cyclists choose from 16, 40 or 64 miles that start in Richardson and pass through Plano, Murphy, Wylie and Garland, across the dam at Lake Lavon and through Nevada and Josephine. Registration is $35. The Jacob Cangemi Memorial Scholarship Fund was founded in 2007 by Renee Cangemi, her sister Yvette Oquin and Laurice Goodwin, Jacob’s former teacher and mentor, to honor the memory of Renee’s son, Jacob.
