Navy Seaman Recruit Aldo Arredondo, son of Modesta and Javier Vazquez of Princeton, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
During the eight-week program, Arredondo completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.
According to the Navy, the capstone event of boot camp is “Battle Stations.”
This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet.
"Battle Stations" is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly ''Navy'' flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a Sailor.
Arredondo is a 2007 graduate of Princeton High School.
Farmersville student Paul Kleiman has been named as a commended student in the 2008 National Merit Scholarship Program.
A letter of recommendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation will be be presented by the principal to this scholastically talented senior.
About 34,00 commended students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2008 competition for National Merit Scholarships, commended students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.4 million student who entered the 2008 competition by taking the 2006 preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
“The young people named commended students in the 2008 National Merit Scholarship Program are distinguished by their strong academic performance n the rigorous competition,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC.
“Our nation’s pursuit of educational excellence can be furthered by publicly honoring these outstanding students and by acknowledging the important role schools play in fostering their development.
We hope that this recognition will contribute to their educational opportunities and encourage all students to strive to realize their potential.”
